Business and rental property owners please note.

The 2011 business income tax returns contain new questions specifically related to the requirement to file Form 1099 for payments  made during the year.

There are two questions. The first asks:
'Did you make any payments in 2011 that would require you to file Form(s) 1099 (see instructions)?'
The second asks:
'If “Yes,” did or will you file all required Forms 1099?'

The point of these questions is obvious and they must be answered in order for your return to be complete and accurate.  We will not be able to answer these questions when preparing your returns without your specific instructions.

1099s are required to be provided to the recipient of the income by January 31 and filed with the Internal Revenue Service by February 28, if on paper, or by March 31, if efiled.

The most common 1099 filing for businesses is Form 1099-MISC, Box 7 Non-employee Compensation.  For more information view the instructions here.

Business returns include: Schedule C (Form 1040) Sole proprietors, Schedule E (Form 1040) Rent and Royalty Income, Schedule F (Form 1040) Farmers and Ranchers, Form 1120 (C Corporations), Form 1120-S (S corporations, Form 1065 (Partnerships, including multi-member LLCs), etc.

If you are a Quickbooks user, your software enables you to prepare paper 1099s or to efile them.  The forms can be ordered from Intuit. For efile information click here.

There are other independent internet solutions as well.  We do not have any connection to Intuit/Quickbooks nor do we endorse any internet solution provider however you may find these solutions to be what you are looking for. Following are two providers we are aware of:

SpeedEfiler.com (by Greatland)  tax1099.com

As a last alternative: We also prepare 1099's for clients when requested.  This is a more expensive alternative than those mentioned above.
